Synopsis

The engagement of migrant labourers in industrial units temporarily solved their livelihood problems and stopped many of them from returning to their native places as well, said officials. About 5,380 units have been allowed to function across J&K, out of which 4,829 are operational and have engaged about 41,386 workers, as per official figures.

Nearly 2,645 units are operational in Jammu, engaging 29,122 workers, while 2,184 units are operational in the Valley, engaging about 12,264 workers.

Last month officials had revealed that more than 56,000 migrant workers were stuck in J&K due to the lockdown forced by Covid-19 and that the administration was devising a strategy to engage them and also plan their travel back home.

“We have opened up units in an attempt to revive economic activity. Many of them are following the safety protocol amid the pandemic. Now a lot will depend upon the demand in the market for these units to continue operations,” Mehmood Shah, director, industries and commerce, Kashmir, told ET.

The administration has allowed bat manufacturing, cherry and strawberry canning units, pesticide units and cold storages, among others, to function so as to fulfil their seasonal demand and also engage more workers. “We want economic activity to pick up. Industry is the backbone of economy and we hope that employment of these workers would have trickle-down effect as well,” said Anoo Malhotra, director, industries and commerce, Jammu.

Meanwhile, J&K administration asked all migrant workers to register with the labour department so that their travel plans and screening for Covid-19 can be formalised.
